RADA helps drought-affected farmers

LINSTEAD, St. Catherine:

THE RURAL Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) in St. Catherine in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture is extending assistance to farmers who were severely affected by drought conditions over the past several months.

Deputy Parish Manager for RADA Pedra Worghs told farmers recently at the office in Linstead that they will not be receiving cash grants but feeds, fertilisers and chickens. The farmers will also get micro irrigation assistance, by way of small water tanks, pipes and fittings. The deputy parish manager said farmers will also be assisted with technical advice on how to set up the tanks with pipe fittings.

Mr. Worghs said these tanks will provide a permanent water supply system for drought stricken communities in St. Catherine hardest hit by the drought. Affected communities include Glengoffe, Riversdale, Harkers Hall in North East St. Catherine, several cane farmers on the southern plains, including Bernard Lodge and the Inswood Estate, along with sections of Old Harbour.
