THE EDITOR, Madam:
SO THE Church is being accused of causing the spread of HIV/AIDS. How absurd!
HIV/AIDS is classified as a sexually transmitted disease. Essentially, it is the consequence of a loose, promiscuous approach to sex. Initially, it was thought to be a homosexual disease but we have come to see that in Jamaica, for instance, there are more heterosexuals with HIV/AIDS than are homosexuals.
If there is one point on which the various denominations of the Christian church have never had a disagreement, it is regarding the proper place of sex in human affairs. The Church has uniformly and consistently taught that sex is ordained by God for mutual satisfaction between a man and his wife each exclusively reserved and committed to the other in this regard and for procreation of the human race in a stable family environment.
Persons who believe they are wiser than God and can elect to turn God's plan upside down by making sex into a casual, free-for-all sport despite the constant warnings against the dangers of this type of behaviour can have no one but themselves to blame when they contract the disease.
I came upon a programme on Hot 102 some evenings ago where they were talking about sex. The whole focus of the discussion it seemed, was on the use of condom, no appeal whatsoever to any sense of morality! In fact, I got the distinct impression that the purpose of the programme was to promote promiscuity. Can you imagine using as theme music, songs with words such as "I want a 'jook' off a Jacqueline" ('jook' referring to sexual intercourse) and "I wanna sex you baby" in a radio programme meant to teach young people about sex. How can such treatment of the subject lead to anything but the inculcation of an irresponsible attitude toward sex. Shame on you, Hot 102!
The only effective safeguard against HIV/AIDS is an ordered lifestyle that conforms to the Creator's designs for sex. Resort to the use of condoms is no substitute. When the moment for procreation comes it cannot happen with 'rubbers' in place and parties, if promiscuous, are once again exposed to danger for themselves and their offspring.
Madam, the Church cannot support the free, indiscriminate use of condoms and remain true to the principles of Godly living. If this is what the Church is being criticised for, I say so let it be! Christ was crucified defending what was right. His followers, too, should be prepared to suffer persecution for righteousness sake. However, members of the church community must be foremost and forthright in the expression of love and compassion to those who regrettably, have chosen the wrong path that has led to their destruction.
