In praise of Adams
THE EDITOR, Madam: AS I watched the conclusion of the first Test Match (England vs. The West Indies) on Saturday, I could not help but reflect on the previous dismal performances of the team under the captaincy of Mr. Lara. Inasmuch as his leadership is now history and a whole lot has been said and written by people more able than I am, there is one thing I am sure of and that is, the same way that enthusiasm binds a team and sets them working towards a common goal, demoralisation is just as virulent and has the opposite effect. I am not in any way a cricketing enthusiast, but commendation must be given when due. Mr. Adams has led his team from the front and without any doubt in my mind, he must have taken to them both his Jamaica College school motto and school prayer. With work burning in the fields, he has been called to serve and he serves with gladness and a spirit of comradeship and loyalty to his team. The negativism that existed prior to his captaincy and which had a disheartening influence on the thinking of the cricket faithfuls, has just about disappeared and forgotten. The esprit-de-corps of the current team and its leader must be the biggest single factor in the winning formula. A common interest and a common objective are ties that bind people together and in the eyes of the enthusiast every obstacle is miniscule when compared to the enormous potentials of the opportunity. Mr. Adams and his team saw work burning in the fields and tested the strength of their enthusiasm. They came, they saw, they conquered. I am, etc., SONIA CHRISTIE Stewart Town Trelawny
