Credibility of 'Commish' at stake

THE EDITOR, Madam:

OUR COMMISSIONER of Police has no one to blame but himself if he is made a scapegoat by the Government. Up to now he has not shown us as a nation, that he is above political manipulation. In stating my claim, I wish to cite two examples such as the one in May 1997 when he claimed that the alleged gunmen in Tivoli Gardens who could not be found, disappeared into 'tunnels'. I even remembered him taking the entire news media to Tivoli Gardens, trying to prove his claim.

Another recent example is the Mountain View Avenue shoot-out in which our Commissioner accused the civil group known as Jamaicans for Justice of being responsible, even though he had no proof or evidence, except that the president of that group is a sister of the proposed Jamaica Labour Party caretaker for the area a move to link both the non-political Jamaicans for Justice and the Jamaica Labour Party with gunmen and criminal activities, and also to discredit and embarrass them.

Considering these political factors, can the Commish credibly defend his position when the witch-hunting begins soon?

I am, etc.,

WINSTON MARAGH JP
