Chanderpaul hits big 100

Chanderpaul

WORCESTER, (AP): BRIAN Lara failed again but an unbeaten hundred by Shivnarine Chanderpaul ensured a draw in West Indies' tour opener against Worcestershire at New Road yesterday.

Lara, lasted just two balls in the second innings to add to his four-ball knock in the first, but Chanderpaul's unbeaten 161 propped the visitors to 301 for nine.

Ramnaresh Sarwan scored 30 in a crucial partnership of 78 in 25 overs but his dismissal had West Indies struggling at 171 for five. But Worcestershire's last opportunity slipped away eight runs later when Mahendra Nagamootoo was dropped at fine leg.

Chanderpaul, completed his century in four hours.

The tourists then declared 233 ahead and probably viewed the match as a worthwhile introduction to English conditions, even if there is some early concern with their front-line batting.
