National Environment Awareness Week June 4-11
NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT Awareness Week will be observed June 4 to 11 and the Natural Resources Conservation Authority (NRCA) has planned several activities to highlight national and global environmental issues.
The week will be celebrated under the theme: 2000: The Environment Millennium - Time for Action.
To mark the national observance, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land and Environment, Seymour Mullings, will deliver a message to the nation on World Environment Day, Monday June 5.
The week's activities will begin on Sunday, June 4 with a church service at St. Luke's Anglican Church in Cross Roads beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Environmental displays will be mounted in libraries islandwide for public viewing. Displays will also be on show at the Ministry of Land and Environment, Hagley Park Road and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, New Kingston.
A leadership workshop on Environmental Education for Sustainable Development for Principals and teachers will be held from June 6 to 7 at Runaway Bay HEART Hotel, St. Ann beginning at 9:00 a.m.
The University of Technology (UTech) will host a public meeting on: Towards a Watershed Policy in Jamaica, on Tuesday, June 5 at 5:00 p.m.
Jamaica Conservation Development Trust (JCDT) will host Green Expo 2000 from June 9 - 11 at the National Arena starting at 8:00 a.m. It will be held under the theme: Jamaica's Environment... Fighting for Survival.
The Green Expo will include exhibitions, nature trail and petting zoo. There will also be a cyber centre and children's corner.
The Portland Environmental Protection Association (PEPA) environmental quiz and tree planning ceremony is slated for Friday, June 9 at Neville Antonio Park, Portland at 2:00 p.m.
Throughout the week, officers from the NRCA will conduct environmental talks at selected schools islandwide.
