Council wants collection responsibility

SPANISH TOWN: SECRETARY/MANAGER OF the St. Catherine Parish Council, Michael Morris, is urging central government to hand over the responsibility of collecting property and motor vehicle taxes to the Parish Council.

Mr. Morris was speaking at the monthly meeting of the Greater Portmore Citizens Association on Saturday, May 20.

He said that if the Parish Council assumed that responsibility, the compliance rate would increase from 30 per cent to 80 per cent. Mr. Morris said the Council would put the appropriate mechanisms in place to make it more friendly for the public to pay their taxes. He also suggested that central government give the council the authority to fix the rates of those taxes.
