Big Pools carryover

Orville Clarke, Freelance Writer

FOR the second consecutive week, the winning level in the Racing Pools game is 29 points. The carryover is $402,161.90.

This time around the $120,000 category two prize was shared by five punters, each receiving $24,188.30.

Among the winners was a popular clockman who, after the last race on Saturday, felt 30 and not 29 points had done the trick. He will be pleasantly surprised to learn otherwise. A breakdown of the other prizes is as follows:

# 34 second dividends of $1,016.30 each for 28 points.

# 109 third dividends of $158.50 each for 28 points.

# Sales totalled $698,076.50 on 2,820 coupons -- up appreciably from $517,794.00 and 2,426 coupons the previous week.

The steep upturn in sales must have pleased officials of Caymanas Track Limited, bearing in mind that the Racing Pools had to compete with a fantastic lotto jackpot of prize of $54 million.

On a day when CASTAGNA at 50-1 in the third race shocked virtually all players, the game also threw up a mild upsetter in TURKISH PRINCE at 9-1 in the sixth race for $40,000 claimers.

On the flip side, there were three winning favourites in PAPPARAZZI at 2-1 in the first race, BOLD REBEL at 8-5 in the fourth, LIFE IS GOOD at 4-5 in the fifth and NORAN BATMAN at 3-5 in the seventh.

Other winners were SKIPPER WAY at 7-2 in the second and MR. VIGOROUS at 7-2 in the closing race which resulted in a blanket finish involving three horses.

Leading jockey Andrew Ramgeet rode the first of two winners when making most with PAPPARAZZI in the opening race over 1400 metres.

DIGNITARY, who lowered her sights and was highly touted to win despite the presence of her out of form jockey Wilmot Gajardah, finished lame after chasing home the winner, while highly fancied GROOM'S BRIDE ran below expectations to finish fourth, obviously preferring two turn races.

SKIPPER WAY made all convincingly for a repeat victory in the second race, while the grey CASTAGNA, ridden by Panamanian jockey Ameth Robles, dropped on rivals like a ton of bricks in the last furlong in what was a strangely run race.

Two turn specialist BOLD REBEL rebounded in the following race, while LIFE IS GOOD showed marked improvement without her customary visor to romp the fifth race under leading all-time jockey Winston Griffiths.

Life was good for trainer Philip Feanny and owner/breeder the Lakeland Farms when later in the afternoon they completed a double with the progressive RHYTHM OF MY HEART in the She's on Wheels Trophy, a non-Pools race.
