Adams happy for Hinds, Sarwan

BRIDGETOWN, CANA:

WEST Indies' cricket captain Jimmy Adams is pleased with the performance of young batsmen Wavell Hinds and Ramnaresh Sarwan in the drawn second Cable and Wireless cricket Test against Pakistan at Kensington Oval.

Hinds, a 23-year-old left-hander from Jamaica, completed a fine individual display with a career-best first innings knock of 165, followed by 52 to earn the man-of-the-match award in the absorbing contest which ended on Monday.

Guyana's diminutive right-hander Sarwan, making his debut at the age of 19, was unbeaten in both innings, scoring a responsible 84 not out and 11 not out.

"I'm very happy for both of them. I've watched them come up through "A" team cricket. I had a bit of personal experience with both of them but what is even more pleasing is the improvement that we are seeing," Adams said after the game.

"We are seeing young men making the grade and making statements early in their career and I think that is a wonderful and positive sign for our cricket," Adams said.

Adams, who captained both Hinds and Sarwan on the Windies "A" tour of South Africa two years ago, said having the young players in the team definitely helps.

"...To see them coming through the ranks and fulfilling their potential is really a wonderful feeling," Adams said.
