Ja Freight, Seaboard win JMA awards

JAMAICA FREIGHT & Shipping Company Limited won the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association (JMA) Associate Award for 'Invaluable Service to the Manufacturing Sector in the area of Sea Transportation for 1999'.

Seaboard Freight & Shipping Jamaica Limited was runner-up in this category.

Mrs. Christine Johnston, Marketing Manager accepted the award on behalf of Jamaica Freight & Shipping, while Mr. Grantley Stephenson, Chief Executive Officer of Seaboard Freight & Shipping Jamaica Limited, accepted the award on his company's behalf. The well-supported 32nd annual Awards Banquet was held at Le Méridien Jamaica Pegasus on May 12.

Awards were presented in nine major categories, and seven product groupings. This year JMA added four Associate categories ­ sea transportation, insurance industry, banking sector and air transportation. Six Associate awards were presented to firms deemed to have contributed considerably to the development of the manufacturing sector.

"We will continue to strive to play our part in shipping, as in so doing we hope to assist in the development of the manufacturing industry," said Christine Johnston of Jamaica Freight & Shipping Ltd.

Topping the list of JMA awards was the prestigious Governor General's Cup presented to J. Wray & Nephew Limited. The company was voted the top manufacturing entity for 1999 and singled out for leading the field in manufacturing and good corporate citizenship. This award was presented by the Governor General His Excellency Sir Howard Cooke.

J. Wray & Nephew Limited also won the Prime Minister's Cup for being the Champion Exporter and the Robert Lightbourne Award for Productivity.

The annual event seeks to recognise exemplary achievements in terms of production output of the companies nominated for the awards.
