Axum go on goal spree

By Paul A. Reid, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

NEW COMERS Axum FC of St. Mary made a bright start to their National A-League campaign yesterday when they hammered seasoned campaigners Maverley/ Hughenden 5-1 at the Westmoreland Oval.

Axum just missed qualifying for the A-League last season after winning the Eastern Confederation's Elimination League but made sure of taking full use of home field advantage against the Kingston team.

Meanwhile both Montego Bay teams Seba United and Mt Salem were both 1-0 winners away from home.

Former national senior invitee Daniel Ricketts who missed all of last season after undergoing knee injury, scored for the Dr. Dean Weatherly coached Seba as they beat Israel of Clarendon at Monymusk.

Oniel Blake got the winner for Mt. Salem, formerly Violet Kickers, in their scrappy win over the Barrington Gaynor coached Bull Bay at Bull Pen field in Eastern Kingston.

First half goals by Devon Wilson (24th minute) and Andrew Mais (31st) gave Central Link a 2-1 victory over Black Stars at Prison Oval.

Playing without five of their top players from last season, the home team still held its own.

After a lacklustre start by both teams, the tempo picked up in the final 15 minutes of the half as the home team dominated. It was Wilson who gave the home team the lead after dribbling inside the six-yard box and from an acute angle on the left side, kicked past the goalkeeper.

Seven minutes later they increased the lead as Barrington Planter sent a lovely through pass to Mais just at the half-line mark, who dribbled past a host of players then kicked powerfully to push his team to a 2-0 half-time lead.

Meanwhile the game at Addison Park between Brazil and Rivoli was not played because of heavy rains and a waterlogged field.
