Lucas brush aside Kingston

Lucas's Kevin Riley is run out by Matthew Sinclair of Kingston during their Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) one-day cricket match at Sabina Park yesterday. Looking back to see his partner's demise is Oniel Powell. - Junior Dowie

A GOOD all-round performance from former Jamaica player Delroy Morgan led Lucas to a 41-run win over Kingston in the opening round of the Jamaica Cricket Association's All-Island one-day cricket competition at Sabina Park yesterday. Scores: Lucas 206 from 50 overs; Kingston 165 in 43.5 overs.

Sent in by the home team, Lucas got off to a fairly good start with Kevin Riley and Oniel Powell posting 51 for the first wicket. However, Lucas then lost two quick wickets. First to go was Riley, run out for 13, and Maurice Clake went without adding to the score. Powell (34, 6x4s) did not last long after that as he went leg before to captain Kerry Scott. Morgan and Wayne Gayle added 34 for the fourth wicket before Gayle (30, 4x4s) lost his wicket to Raymond Ferguson at 117 for four.

Soon after it was 132 for five when schoolboy Jermaine Allen joined Morgan. However, he did not look confident. He got a little frustrated, advanced down the wicket and was stumped by Matthew Sinclair for six.

Discarded Jamaica wicketkeeper Andre Coley joined his captain and the two added 33 for the sixth wicket. But Coley, trying to push the score along, was caught by Scott at extra cover for 17. When Morgan went stumped by the wicketkeeper for 45 at 176 for seven, things were almost over for Lucas as they only managed to add another 30 for the remaining three wickets.

Kingston, in reply, looked good at the start of the run chase. Openers Nicholas Austin and Gregory Buchanan put on 50 runs before Austin was bowled by Omar Burke in his first over for 31. When Raymond Ferguson joined Buchanan the two continued where Austin left off and added 57 for the second wicket.

But with the re-introduction of Gary Herbine, who was punished early, and Delroy Morgan, the wickets came easier. Ferguson was bowled by Morgan for 23, before Herbine removed Buchanan for 45 at 107 for three.

Things got more difficult for Kingston when in-form batsman Terrence Corke was bowled by Herbine for one and Sinclair was trapped leg before by Burke for 13 as the team slipped to 137 for six. At that stage it was virtually all over for the Tigers.

Morgan took 5-16 from 8.5 overs, Burke 2-29 from his allotted 10 and Herbine 2-42 from eight.

AT CHEDWIN PARK: Captain Tamar Lambert scored an unbeaten half century to guide St. Catherine CC to a six wicket victory over St. Thomas. Scores: St. Thomas 164 in 45 overs (Dennis Gordon 32, Clinton Bent 28; Odean Brown 4-36, Bevon Brown 2-27, Jermaine Lawson 3-32). St. Catherine CC 165 for four off 33.5 overs (Tamar Lambert 65 not out, with 7x4s, Renford Pinnock Jr. 45).

AT FOLLY OVAL: Portland upset All-island Rothmans Senior Cup champions Melbourne by three wickets. Scores: Melbourne 123 off 35.1 overs (Dillon Ebanks 28, Fitzroy Peterkin 20, Aubrey Wollaston 19; Bwainnan Stona 4-8, St-Clair Searchwell 3-23). St. Thomas 124 for seven (Renford Bodie 31 not out, C. Clarke 23, Searchwell 20).
