Workmen lay the foundation for Silverstone Basic School in Greater Portmore. This is one of 11 schools being constructed by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
A NEW 1,350-capacity comprehensive high school at Cumberland, Portmore, St. Catherine, is one of two schools now under construction, as part of a $1.2 billion New Schools Programme being implemented by the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The other is a 300-place basic school at Silverstone in Greater Portmore.
The Cumberland school is expected to be constructed at an approximate cost of $211 million and the Silverstone basic school, at an estimated cost of $36 million both to be completed for the September 2000 school year. Contractors on the project are the West Indies Home Contractors Limited (WIHCON), who have established a track record for the design and build system being used in this programme.
The programme seeks to increase the school stock through the construction of four comprehensive, two primary and five basic schools over a 30-month period, in response to the growing population in the southeast St. Catherine area.
The comprehensive high schools will each provide an additional 1,350 places, the primary, 1,200 places and the basic 300 places, all in the Portmore/Greater Portmore/St. Catherine area.
