THE United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCB) has said that an affidavit which alleges that former West Indies captain Brian Lara placed bets on cricket matches in South Africa is being forwarded to the International Cricket Conference (ICC).
In a story carried on its website yesterday, the Natal Witness, a South African newspape,r said the UCB's Bronwyn Wilkinson has confirmed that they had an affidavit which alleges that Lara placed bets on games played during the Total Triangular Series in South Africa in February 1993. The one-day series involved South Africa, Pakistan and the West Indies.
"Yes, we have an affidavit from a Cape Town businessman and we will be forwarding it to the ICC's Code of Conduct committee and to the King Commission," she said.
Wilkinson said the UCB's chief executive Ali Bacher is already in London for the ICC meeting next week.
"He knows about the affidavit but he does not wish to get involved at this stage.
"It really is a matter for the West Indian board and the ICC," she said.
Wilkinson said she was contacted by a number of British newspapers about the story.
"Lara is presently playing in a Test there so obviously it is big news," she said.
