The plague of unprofessional real estate agents

THE EDITOR, Madam:

HAVE YOU noticed that one of the most inefficient and ineffective group of "professionals" in Jamaica are real estate sales representatives?

I find that they frequently do not return calls, and are often ignorant of the properties they are selling, often unable to give basic information like exactly where the property is located. One such agent told me recently that he didn't know the name of the person occupying the premises he was trying to sell! Many even want you to collect them and take them to the sites they advertise, and incidentally, would be seeing for the very first time!

I wish these people would understand that they are in a service business. In large part, the sector seems to be crowded by hustlers. Is there some regulatory body in place to oversee these people? Gone are the days when persons the calibre of a Donald Stiebel (God rest his soul) did this type of work for a living and was really passionate about it.

Will the responsible agency overseeing these hustlers please put some pressure on them to ensure that the public get some value for their money.

I am, etc.,

CARL BLISS
