Let the JLP sink or swim

THE EDITOR, Madam:

JAMAICA -- WITHOUT much drama but a slow drain of resources, the country continues to gasp amid debt, loss of competitiveness regionally, and problems with crime. The P.J. Patterson government has an advantage in that few Jamaicans see Edward Seaga as a viable alternative once again, but this lack of viable leadership transition may ultimately damage the quality of governance.

The above is part of a statement made by Georges A. Fauroil, director, Americas Program, Center for Strategic & International Studies in Washington, D.C. before the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, House Commi-ttee on International Relations on May 17, 2000.

The full statement was on U.S. Policy Outlook on the Caribbean. This report is made by hard-nosed, no-nonsense technocrats to the U.S. government.

Based on these reports the U.S.A. formulates policies for individual Caribbean countries. Mr. Seaga is now the Achilles tendon of the Jamaica Labour Party. Even in the international arena it is known that the JLP cannot win an election under his leadership.

With this mountain of evidence against Mr. Seaga (whom this nation respects) he must make the rational move and relinquish leadership of the JLP, wash his hands like Pontius Pilate of biblical fame and let the JLP sink or swim!

I am etc,

GARTH MARTIN
