BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC - Voters on this 166-square-mile island go to the polls on February 21 to elect a new government, the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) said Tuesday.
Nomination Day is set for February 6.
Prime Minister Freundel Stuart said Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave has issued the writ for a general election and dissolved Parliament, which earlier on Tuesday adjourned its last session until February 5.
The announcement ends months of speculation as to when the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) will seek a second term in office.
The main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) had boycotted Tuesday's sitting of the House of Assembly, in protest against the delay in calling the election past the fifth anniversary of the DLP administration on January 15.
